I’m constantly amazed at Republican pundits who think they are educating the GOP loyal and conservative faithful by telling us that the economic issues have more sway in the minds of voters than abortion. That is a self-defeating perspective. The Pro-Life perspective is one that has ability to sway many voters who are not Republican to vote for Republican candidates. Why are they throwing away an opportunity to get more votes? It’s mind boggling!
Who should we follow when it comes to electoral victory? How about Ronald Reagan! He was a social conservative, fiscal conservative, defense conservative libertarian. From his campaign for President in the 1980s, we have the Reagan Coalition. This Coalition included social/moral conservatives, fiscal conservatives, libertarians, and the Reagan Democrats. We can win with those Democrats who represent one aspect of the Independent/Swing vote. So why are we throwing these votes away?
The ideas espoused by many on the left in the GOP (yes, there are many among us who disagree with the rest of us – big tent ideology) are contrary to genuine conservative values and reduce each election to a question of winning with one hand tied behind our back. We shouldn’t follow those who say, ‘leave the social/moral issues to next year while we deal with the fiscal issues this year.’ It is a fraudulent choice. We should campaign in each election across the country on both the social/moral and fiscal issues at the same time.
Social Conservative/Fiscal Progressive Democrats have nothing in common with the Social Liberal/Fiscal Conservative Republicans (rhinos – Republicans in Name Only). The odd idea that we may lose elections if we stand for social moral values neglects the victory Reagan had with these Democrats, who do have something in common with Social/Fiscal Conservative Republicans. If we want to win in any election, we need both the social and fiscal issues on the table as we compete for votes.
Further, why are these pundits advertising their wisdom to withdraw from the political battlespace of ‘abortion’? Never mind the possibility they just don’t support the Right to Life of children in the womb, perhaps they are genuinely deceived. As such, they think that our position on abortion just cannot win against a Pro-Choice argument. Nothing could be further from the truth. We carry the arguments of transcendence that support the Right to Life of Women and Children! We support the Right of Women to Choose and the Responsibility they have in decision making to choose what is right! We are like the feminists of old who said that Abortion is Child Murder. These feminists said clearly that Women have a Right to Choose their elected representatives but they said no to elective abortions. In this also, we are in agreement with the Supreme Court (1973 Roe v Wade) who said that women do not have an absolute right to choose abortion on demand.
We do not have to concede the political contests to the Pro-Abortion candidates! We can stand our ground with godly resolve. We can persuade people to the share truth and win hearts and minds of voters along with their votes. The pundits are not telling us the whole story and are sadly wrong about the issues we face. And when they point to economy and inflation vs abortion in the polls, they are inflating the numbers on the economy (inflation is an economic issue; they are double dipping) that only appears to diminish the value of abortion in the minds of voters or pollsters. Be clear on this, Abortion is on the minds of voters and we are obligated to reach out to them with a Pro-Life message.
And why is it that the Republican Party cannot converge as a unified party on the abortion issue? Fighting all elective abortions has the potential of unifying the GOP. All members have a conscience which will reflect moral truths that ‘elective’ abortions are immoral. So, what defines elective abortions? No one disagrees with an abortion due to the Right to Life of the Mother! Saving a mother’s life is one exemption to a prohibition on elective abortions and has been for more than 100 years before Roe v Wade. Also, rape and incest (criminal insemination) are also reasons that appeal to the conscience when the issue of abortion arises. Having an abortion for these 3 reasons account for exemptions to what is an ‘elective abortion’ because they are not examples of election but of necessity. Although in each of these 3 cases an abortion may occur, there are always alternatives.
And why is it that the Democrat Party cannot converge as a unified party on the abortion issue? Granted, the Democrats have largely expunged conservatives from their ranks but there are still a few Blue Dog Democrats who hold to conservative values. These are those who can help their own Party gain sanity on abortion by fighting elective abortions. And until the greater proportion of Democrats agree, their remainder can vote for candidates in the GOP because we are opposed to all elective abortions. Yet the pundits deny them an opportunity because they are short sighted.
So what would a constitutional amendment on abortion look like? Here’s one example:
Respecting the Right to Life of Children, all elective abortions are prohibited; and
Respecting the Right to Life of Mothers, elective abortions do not include saving the Life of a Mother, or ending pregnancies due to criminal insemination.
This is a Right to Life Bill of Rights!
